What is the Booster Club?

How Students Typically Participate

What makes the Boosters So Great?

The Booster Club raises funds for after school athletics through family donations, fundraising and sponsorships.  That's right, parents and community members make it possible for SPMS kids to participate in sports through supervised coed intramural programs and competitive team play

What makes the Boosters So Great?

We help foster school spirit by giving ALL students an opportunity to interact and support each other. Whether as participants or as fans who gather to show their school spirit, all students can benefit from the Booster Club!   And while we don't know what the future holds just yet, we REALLY need our community of parents and friends to help us be prepared when sports resume!

In a typical year, the South Pasadena Middle School athletic program provides opportunities for all students to participate on a sports team.  We have a coed intramural program for all 6th graders to participate in after school.  The intramural program is provided for 6th graders so that they may have more opportunities to engage in physical activities, to make new friends, and to build on their team work skills.  By participating in this program, those 6th grade athletes can develop and improve their athletic skills so that they are better prepared for the following year when they must try out for a sport as a 7th and 8th grader.

In addition, our 7th and 8th grade boys' and girls' sports teams participate in the 210 League which involves many local schools and is highly competitive.  At this level of play, students must tryout in order to make a sports team here at SPMS, so unfortunately “cuts” are made by the coach.  This is never an easy situation for the student athlete, coach and sports coordinator but at this level of play we are trying to create the reality of what to expect at the high school level.

Should your child make a team as a 7th or 8th grader, a grade check will be conducted (C’s or better in all classes), your child will need to have a physical completed and all necessary paperwork submitted on time. Should your child engage in multiple sports as a 7th and 8th grader, they will only need to submit the completion of a physical form once and it will be good for the rest of the school year.

Practice days and times are determined by the coach and will be shared at the parent meetings that are conducted for every sport prior to the start of the season.  As the sports coordinator, I would like to share that we are very fortunate to have such a great sports program.  The majority of the funding for this program comes from the South Pasadena Middle School Booster Club.  Throughout the years they have paid for uniforms, referees, transportation (1 bus for the first away game), equipment, coaches and coordinators. It is strongly encouraged that all parents join the Booster Club and contribute what you can financially in order to keep the program at full strength.  There are never any fees charged to participate, but we do ask the athletes who do make the competitive teams to participate with fundraising.

This year, as we are all aware, things will be different. Unfortunately, there will be no fall sports. As we adapt to the current environment, we also are working to ensure that athletics continue to remain an important component of the middle school experience.  We are staying in close contact with other schools in our region, and are hopeful that sports will return once it is safe.  We also are brainstorming ways to keep our kids active, engaged and connected during this challenging time. Please continue to support the Booster Club so that we are ready to hit the ground running when the time comes to return.  Should you have any questions about the sports program do not hesitate to email me.
