New AD for the Year Announced

SPMS has announced a new Athletic Director for the year:  Bruno Costa!

Bruno Costa was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He played youth soccer in Brazil on state level until the age of 17, studied Physical Education in Brazil, and moved to the US in 2004 to work as a coach and Director of Operations for a Brazilian soccer camps institute. Bruno’s professional experience ranges from coaching to managing and creating sports programs at the local, national, and international level. Bruno has coached for more than 20 years, helping to develop youth club, high school, college and professional level athletes.

Bruno believes the personal relationships and a focus on the planning, organization and implementation of ideas are the key elements to build a great experience for students through sports.

Welcome, Bruno!

Is the program for the 7th and 8th graders the same as the program for the 6th graders?
Yes. We will be offering the same sports program each month for both groups.

If I am a 7th or 8th grader but I cannot attend on Mondays and Wednesdays, may my child attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays?
No. For the foreseeable future, we are keeping the 6th graders in one group and the 7th and 8th in a separate group. Sixth graders attend Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 7th and 8th graders attend Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Do you sign the students in and out of the intramural program?
Attendance is taken at the beginning of each session for SPMS contract tracing purposes only. It is a “drop in” program and as such not mandatory to attend each week. Students are also not signed out at the end of the session.
May my child leave early?
The goal is to have students actively participate in the sessions. If they need/want to leave early, they may. They do not sign out when they leave.

Why don’t the intramural sports line up with the competitive sports, so if my child does not make a competitive team he can join that intramural sport?

We are very excited that ALL students will be able to participate in sports after school whether they make a competitive team or not. We tried to line up the seasons but due to field and court constraints, we scheduled the intramural program to complement – not compete with – the competitive sports.  There would not be enough room on the courts or fields to run the same competitive sport as the exact same time/exact same season as its intramural offering – especially as coaches run practices for their competitive teams and the Booster Club has expanded the intramural program to provide opportunities for students in all grades. We have tried to line them up as close as possible, but the guide is field and court usage and available space at the Middle School.
